Monday belongs to Lord Shiva. People who want peace of mind, a settled home, a good spouse or a child keep the Monday fast. It is a simple vrat: a day of fasting, water and bel leaves on the Shivling, and one meal in the evening after the katha has been heard. In towns and villages alike, this story is read aloud in homes on Monday evenings.

The ruler of Monday is the Moon, and the Moon sits on Shiva's forehead. That is why this fast is seen as a day for steadying the mind and earning Shiva's grace. Some keep it all their lives, others take a vow of sixteen Mondays and close it with an udyapan. The full story, the method and the udyapan are given below.

The story

In a certain town there lived a wealthy moneylender. His house wanted for nothing, yet he had no child. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. Every Monday he fasted, went to the temple, poured water on the Shivling, lit a lamp and worshipped with a full heart. Years passed this way, but his lap stayed empty.

One day Mother Parvati, seeing his devotion, said to Lord Shiva, 'Lord, this moneylender has served you for so many years. He has only one wish, a son. Grant it.' Shiva replied, 'Parvati, every being in this world receives the fruit of its own karma. A child is not written in his fate.' But Parvati kept asking, and at last Shiva said, 'Very well. He shall have a son, but the boy will live only twelve years.'

The moneylender, who was in the temple, overheard this. He neither rejoiced nor grieved. He went on keeping the Monday fast and worshipping Shiva exactly as before. In time his wife gave birth to a beautiful boy. The house celebrated, but the words 'twelve years' stayed lodged in the father's mind. He told no one.

When the boy turned eleven, the moneylender decided to send him to Kashi to study. He called the boy's maternal uncle and said, 'Take him to Kashi. Wherever you halt on the way, feed Brahmins, give alms and have a yajna performed.' Uncle and nephew set out. At every stop they fed Brahmins, gave gifts and moved on.

On the way they came to a city where the king's daughter was about to be married. The prince she was to wed was blind in one eye. His father feared that if the bride's family found out, the match would break. He saw the moneylender's son, handsome and well-mannered, and said to the uncle, 'Let this boy stand as the groom for a little while. Once the rounds of the fire are done we will give you money and return the boy.' The uncle agreed.

The wedding took place. But the boy was honest. Before leaving, he wrote on the princess's veil: 'You have been married to me, but the prince you will be sent with is one-eyed. I am a moneylender's son and I am going to Kashi to study.' The princess read it and refused to go with the one-eyed prince. When the king learned the whole story he kept her in his own palace. Meanwhile uncle and nephew reached Kashi and the boy's studies began.

Time went by. On the day the boy completed twelve years, the uncle arranged a yajna and a feast for Brahmins. The boy said, 'Uncle, I do not feel well.' He went inside, lay down, and within moments his life left him. When the uncle saw it, tears poured from his eyes. 'How will I face my sister?' he thought. Yet he did not want the Brahmins' meal to be left unfinished, so he held back his weeping and fed them first. Only then did he sit beside the body and cry his heart out.

At that very hour Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati were passing through the sky. Parvati heard the sound of weeping and said, 'Lord, someone is in great sorrow. Take it away.' Shiva went closer and said, 'This is the moneylender's son to whom I gave twelve years. His span is complete.' Parvati said, 'No, Lord, give him life, or his parents will give up theirs too. This moneylender has kept your fast all his days.' Pleased, Shiva restored the boy to life. He sat up saying 'Om Namah Shivaya'.

Uncle and nephew finished the studies and turned home. On the way they came to the same city. The king recognised the boy and, overjoyed, sent his daughter with him along with great wealth. Back home, the moneylender and his wife had vowed that if their son did not return alive, they would end their own lives. When they saw him come back with a bride, their joy knew no bounds. That night Lord Shiva appeared to the moneylender in a dream and said, 'By the merit of your fast and your katha I have given your son his life.' Whoever keeps the Monday fast with faith and hears this story is freed from trouble, and their wish is fulfilled.

How to keep the fast

On Monday, rise before sunrise, bathe and put on clean clothes. White or light colours are considered good. Take the sankalp, the vow, in your mind: 'Today I keep the Monday fast of Lord Shiva.' If it is a sixteen-Monday vrat, say the count as well.

At your home shrine or in a Shiva temple, bathe the Shivling with water and milk. Then offer bel leaves, white flowers, unbroken rice (akshat), sandal paste, datura and sacred ash. Offer flowers and sindoor to Mother Parvati too. Light a lamp and incense.

Chant 'Om Namah Shivaya', at least one mala (108 times). You may also read the Shiv Chalisa or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra if you wish.

Keep the fast through the day. Water, fruit, milk and dry fruits are allowed. Avoid grains, salt and fried food. Those who cannot manage a full fast may take a phalahar: sabudana, buckwheat or water-chestnut flour, potatoes.

In the evening, after sunset, worship Shiva again and read or listen to the Somvar Vrat Katha. After the story, perform the aarti and share the prasad.

After the katha and aarti, eat one sattvic meal. By tradition the evening meal is cooked without salt or with rock salt, but this varies from home to home.

How many weeks: all the Mondays of Shravan, sixteen Mondays, or for life; all three practices are common. New devotees usually begin on the first Monday of Shravan or on any Monday of the bright fortnight (shukla paksha).

On the day of the fast, avoid anger, lies and harsh words. Hold no grudge. This vrat is of the mind, not only of the stomach.

Udyapan (completing the vrat)

When the sixteen Mondays, or the number you vowed, are complete, perform the udyapan on the seventeenth Monday. Worship Shiva and Parvati fully that day, bathe the Shivling with panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar) and offer bel leaves, flowers and fruit. If you can, have a priest conduct a small havan.

On the day of udyapan, feed Brahmins or people in need and give what you can: white cloth, rice, milk, silver or a cash offering. In the story itself, feeding Brahmins has a special place in protecting the moneylender's son, so do not skip this gift.

The fast may continue after the udyapan if you wish. Udyapan closes the vow, not the devotion to Shiva.

What the fast gives

By tradition, the Monday fast gives a child, a good spouse, relief from illness and peace at home. Unmarried girls keep it for a good husband, married women for the long life of theirs. The message of the story is that a fast kept with faith can turn aside even a misfortune written in one's fate.

A greater fruit still is steadiness of mind. The Moon governs the mind, and the Monday fast, the chanting and the katha gather and quiet it. Those going through worry, sleeplessness or mental unrest are said to gain the most from this vrat.

आरतीAarti

The katha ends with the Shiva aarti 'Om Jai Shiv Omkara'. Ring the bell and blow the conch during the aarti, circle the lamp, and share the prasad with everyone. The Shiv Chalisa and this aarti are being added to this collection.
