Brihaspativar, also called Guruvar, is the day of Lord Vishnu and of Brihaspati, the guru of the gods. The fast is kept for wealth, learning, marriage, children and a prosperous home. Unmarried girls keep it for a good match, and married women for the peace and well-being of the family. It is one of the most widely kept weekly fasts in north India.
The colour of Jupiter is yellow, so yellow clothes, yellow flowers, chana dal, jaggery and turmeric matter greatly in this vrat. The banana plant is worshipped on this day too. Washing one's hair, having it cut, and shaving are all avoided on Thursday. The full story, the method and the udyapan are given below.
The story
Long ago there was a king who was both pious and open-handed. Every Thursday he fasted, worshipped Lord Vishnu and gave freely to those in need. No one in his kingdom went to bed hungry. But his queen did not like this at all. She neither fasted nor gave anything to anyone. In her eyes the king was simply throwing money away.
One Thursday the king had gone hunting. The queen and her maid were alone in the palace. Just then Brihaspati Dev came to the palace gate in the guise of a wandering Brahmin and asked for alms. The queen said, 'Brahmin, I am sick of all this giving. The king keeps scattering our wealth. Tell me some way for all of it to vanish, so that I may have some peace.'
The Brahmin said, 'Lady, you say a strange thing. People ask for wealth and children; you want to lose them? If that is truly your wish, then listen: on Thursdays stop cleaning the house, stop wearing yellow, stop eating yellow food and stop giving alms; wash your hair, wash your clothes, and tell the king to shave. Do this for seven Thursdays and all your wealth will be gone.' With that he disappeared.
The queen did exactly as he said. By the third Thursday famine had struck the kingdom, trade had stopped, the treasury was empty and even the palace had no food. The king could not understand how it had happened. He told the queen, 'I cannot stay here and beg. I will go abroad and earn something.' In a foreign land he began cutting wood in the forest and selling it, and somehow got through his days.
At home the queen and her maid were faint with hunger. The queen said, 'My sister lives in another town and is very rich. Go and ask her for some grain.' The maid reached the sister's house. At that moment the sister was listening to the Thursday katha. The maid called from outside, but the sister gave no answer; one does not get up in the middle of the katha. The maid thought she was being ignored on purpose and came back empty-handed. The queen was deeply hurt.
When the katha ended, the sister remembered that someone had called. She came at once to the queen and said, 'Sister, I was listening to the katha and could not get up. Tell me, what is the matter?' The queen told her everything: how the wealth had gone, how the king had left, how there was not a grain of food in the house. The sister asked, 'Do you keep the Thursday fast?' The queen said, 'No. On a Brahmin's word I did the very opposite.' The sister said, 'That is the reason. It was Brihaspati Dev himself who warned you, and you insulted him.'
The sister explained the vrat: 'Every Thursday wear yellow, worship Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev, offer chana dal and jaggery, pour water on the banana plant, listen to the katha, and never send away empty-handed anyone who asks. Eat one yellow meal in the day, and do not wash your hair.' The next Thursday the queen and her maid kept the fast. They did not even have gram and jaggery; the maid picked up a few coins lying near the palace, bought chana and gur, and the puja was done with that. They heard the katha on empty stomachs and begged Brihaspati Dev's forgiveness with all their heart.
Brihaspati Dev was pleased. From that day things began to turn. Someone sent grain to the palace, debtors began returning what they owed, and slowly the treasury filled again. Meanwhile the king, selling wood in the foreign land, sat down exhausted one day by a river and cursed his fate. Then the same Brahmin appeared and said, 'King, your queen insulted the act of giving; that is why this suffering came. Now she has begun the vrat. You too keep the Thursday fast, go home, and remember: whoever comes to your door asking must never be turned away empty.' The king bowed his head at his feet.
When the king returned he found the palace bright again and the queen, in yellow, listening to the katha. She asked his forgiveness, and together they vowed to keep the Thursday fast for the rest of their lives. The kingdom prospered once more, and the king gave even more freely than before. It is said that whoever keeps the Thursday fast with faith, hears this story, and never turns away a person who asks, has poverty driven from their home by Brihaspati Dev and is given wealth, learning and honour.
How to keep the fast
On Thursday, rise before sunrise and bathe, but do not wash your hair; this is a special rule of the vrat. Wear yellow. Men should not shave on this day, and no one should have their hair cut. Take the sankalp, the vow; if it is a 16-Thursday vrat, say the number.
Place an image or picture of Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev in the home shrine. Offer yellow flowers, turmeric, yellow sandal paste, saffron and a piece of yellow cloth. Light a ghee lamp and show incense.
For the offering, give chana dal (soaked or roasted), jaggery and bananas. Besan laddus or saffron kheer may also be offered. Yellow food is dear to Brihaspati.
Worship the banana plant: pour water and turmeric at its root, tie a yellow thread, light a lamp. Many people plant a banana sapling on the first Thursday and water it every week. Never cut a banana plant on this day.
Chant 'Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah' or 'Om Gurave Namah' for one mala. The Vishnu Sahasranama or the chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' is also recited.
Keep the fast through the day with water, fruit and milk. In the evening, or at midday in some homes, eat one meal after the katha and aarti. Best if the meal is yellow and without salt: chana dal, a turmeric vegetable dish, besan rotis, saffron kheer. Many homes use rock salt. Bananas are not eaten on this day, only offered.
If anyone comes asking during the katha, do not send them away empty-handed. Give chana-gur or yellow food to those in need. This giving is the heart of the vrat.
How many weeks: a vow of 16 Thursdays is the most common; some keep 7, 21 or for life. The vrat can begin on any Thursday, but it is not begun in the month of Paush, and a start is also avoided during the days when Jupiter is combust.
By custom, travel southward and borrowing or lending money are avoided on the day. Hold no ill-will towards anyone; the queen in the story fell through pride and meanness.
Udyapan (completing the vrat)
When the 16 Thursdays, or the number vowed, are complete, perform the udyapan on the seventeenth Thursday. Worship Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev fully that day, worship the banana plant, and if you can, have a priest perform a havan. Wear yellow and decorate the house with yellow flowers.
Feed Brahmins a yellow meal of chana dal, besan laddus and saffron kheer, and give gifts: yellow cloth, chana dal, jaggery, turmeric, gold or a brass vessel, books and dakshina. Jupiter is the planet of the guru, so giving books to a teacher or a student is held to be excellent.
The fast may continue after the udyapan. Many people keep wearing yellow, giving chana-gur and reading the katha every Thursday even after the udyapan, without a full fast.
What the fast gives
By tradition the Thursday fast brings wealth and prosperity, learning, removal of obstacles to marriage, the joy of children and peace in the family. Unmarried girls, and those whose marriage is being delayed, keep this vrat with special care. The story's message is plain: giving does not shrink wealth but grows it, and pride can empty even a royal treasury.
Jupiter is the planet of wisdom, dharma and expansion. Those in study, teaching, law, religion or advisory work are held to gain the most from this fast. Worship of Jupiter is also advised for disorders of the stomach and liver, obesity and a clouded judgement. Whoever keeps this vrat learns to give something to someone every Thursday, and that is its most lasting fruit.
आरतीAarti
The katha ends with the Vishnu aarti 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare'. In many homes the aarti of Brihaspati Dev is sung with it. After the aarti, share the chana-gur and banana prasad. The full text of 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare', with its meaning, is in this collection; the Vishnu Sahasranama is being added.
